Stephen Patrick David Gately (17 March 1976 – 10 October 2009) was an Irish pop singer, songwriter and actor, who, with Ronan Keating, was one of two lead singers of the pop group Boyzone. All of Boyzone's studio albums hit number one in the United Kingdom, their third and last being their most successful internationally. With Boyzone Gately had a record-breaking sixteen consecutive singles enter the top five of the UK Singles Chart. He performed for millions of fans globally. He released a successful solo album in 2000, after the group's initial breakup, which charted in the UK top ten and yielded three UK hit singles, including the top three hit "New Beginning". Gately went on to appear variously in successful stage productions and on television programmes as well as contributing further tracks to various projects. In 2008, he rejoined his colleagues as Boyzone reformed for a series of concerts and recordings.

Liam Ó Maonlaí

Liam Ó Maonlaí (born 7 November 1964 in Dublin, Ireland) is an Irish musician best known as a member of the Hothouse Flowers. Ó Maonlaí formed the band in 1985 with his schoolmate Fiachna Ó Braonáin.

He attended Scoil Lorcáin and Coláiste Eoin, which is a Gaelscoil on Dublin's southside, although he credits his father as his main Irish language influence. He is a fluent speaker of Irish. He won an under 18 all-Ireland award for his skills on the Bodhrán. In 1985, he won the Irish music award known as Gradam Shlogadh along with Hothouse Flowers bandamate. In 2005 he released a solo album entitled Rian which is a collection of tunes and songs in Irish Gaelic.

Ó Maonlai also formed a band called The Complex in the early days with childhood friend Kevin Shields and drummer Colm Ó Cíosóig. After Liam left to form the Hothouse Flowers in 1984, Shields and O'Ciosoig were joined by vocalist Dave Conway and keyboardist Tina (who used no surname), and renamed themselves My Bloody Valentine, taking their name from a low-budget horror film.

Ó Maonlaí is also an active member of the Nuclear Free Future movement and contributed to the hosting of events in Carnsore and in Wexford Town in 2001. In 2004 he was a guest at the barefoot college which is located at Rajasthan, India. During his trip to India he played at the university in Jaipur along with some of the local musicians.

Eddie Heron - A Blackrock Hero

In 1754 a proposal was put forward to build a bathing place at Blackrock.

Following the development of the Dublin-Kingstown Railway in 1834, the Blackrock Promenade and Pier Company Ltd., decided to establish 'a Promenade Pier and suitable Bathing Place for the residents in the locality and for the use of the public at a point near Blackrock Railway Station'. This followed public outcry that access to the sea had been cut off with the building of the railway line.

References from the 'Irish Builder' mention the development and modernisation of the baths in 1887. By 1928 the Municipal Council took over the Baths in time for the Tailteann Games in 1929. Eddie Heron, diving supreme gave exhibitions during the Sandycove Galas, held in Blackrock Baths. The Baths were extremely popular with all age groups. In 1941 Dun Laoghaire Borough Corporation renovated the Baths again.

Blackrock swimming baths fell into disuse in the 1980s and have laid derelict ever since.

The council at some point handed the baths over to private developers and the site is now owned by a consortium that includes Treasury Holdings, Alanis Ltd and the property developer Paddy Kelly, with the Council holding a long-term lease.

The group "Save Our Seafront" are trying to prevent the site being developed to build private apartments.

Diving in Ireland and Eddie Heron
A young man named Eddie Heron first came to prominence at the 1924 Tailteann Games when his father won the men's event and Eddie won the boy's event. His father was a noted gymnast and Eddie learned gymnastics and diving from his father.

At the 1928 Olympics "Fancy Diving" was introduced for the first time, which included somersaults and twists. To gain proficiency in this, Eddie went to the U.S.A. and trained with Olympic Champion Pete Destardine. Pete was so impressed with Eddie that he asked him to emigrate to the U.S.A. and try for a place on the U.S. Olympic Team.

Eddie, born in Dublin in 1910 and originally a Sandycove Diver won his A.S.A. Title representing Half Moon Swimming Club and continued with Half Moon until 1940 when he returned to Sandycove and almost single handed established the club as the cradle of Irish diving for more than forty years. In 1948 he represented Ireland at the 1948 Olympic Games in London. Eddie was also awarded the "Texaco Sports Award" for his great achievements and contribution to diving. This trophy is now competed for at the Irish Diving Championships on the 5 meter Spring Board.

Eddie died in 1985, there is a plaque celebrating his life and swimming achievements located outside Blackrock train station.

Blackrock College - A SCHOOL WITH A DIFFERENCE

Blackrock College, known originally as the French College, Blackrock, was founded in 1860 by Père Jules Leman CSSp and his French companions. They had a dual aim, namely to train personnel for missionary service in the Third World and provide a first class Catholic education for Irish boys. In response to changing circumstances, a highly successful Civil Service training department and university college were established and flourished for some forty years in the Castle. When public examinations at secondary level were introduced, Blackrock was seen to excel. Though founded by a wholly clerical team, lay personnel were soon introduced – their numbers increasing over the years, as finances permitted.

From the start, sport was promoted as an integral part of a balanced formation. Excellence in a broad spectrum of sport was encouraged.

The French tradition of a wide cultural education was developed down the years epitomised today by the annual Leman Concert presented by staff and students in the National Concert Hall. The original missionary aim was maintained in changing circumstances. Blackrock alumni launched many Third Wold initiatives. Bob Geldof’s spectacular contribution – the Live Aid phenomenon in the mid 1980s for Famine Relief – highlighted that tradition. The leading worldwide Catholic lay movement, The Legion of Mary, was founded by a past student Frank Duff. A caring attitude is fostered among the students through participation in St. Vincent de Paul work and major fund-raising initiatives for charitable causes. The Blackrock College motto ‘Fides et Robur’ – Fortitude in the practice of the Faith – is very much alive at Blackrock and beyond. The students, staff, parents, College Union and Community are the source of hope and inspiration for Blackrock College. The Des Places educational Association, as College Patron, maintains the the Spiritan ethos in all five schools – Blackrock College, Rockwell, St. Mary’s, St. Michael’s and Templeogue – conducted by the Congregation of The Holy Spirit in Ireland.

Blackrock (Irish: An Charraig Dhubh) is a suburban town and district located south of the city of Dublin, in Dun Laoghaire-Rathdown County, Ireland, 3 km (1.9 mi) northwest of Dún Laoghaire.

It covers a large area, rising from sea level on the coast to 90 metres (300 ft) at White's Cross on the N11. The town has a range of industries, notably in the IT and service areas.

History
There are many places of historical significance within the area. The childhood home of Lord Edward FitzGerald, Frescati House, was here until 1983, when it was demolished as part of the completion of Roches Stores' new shopping centre. The Cross Avenue was the site of the assassination of Kevin O'Higgins, and was also where Eamon de Valera lived after his Presidential term ended. President de Valera died in Talbot Lodge, which was illegally demolished in December 1989.

Talbot Lodge had formed part of Linden Convalescent Home, of which only one of the original buildings survives. The writer James Joyce lived in a house known as Leoville on Carysfort Avenue for one year in the early 1890s. This house is still extant. The writer Flann O'Brien lived at 4 Avoca Terrace and later at 81 Merrion Avenue. Both houses are still extant.
